Essential Parts of Every Resume

  • Full Name
  • Address
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
  • Web Address (e.g. online portfolio or LinkedIn)

Hint- Be sure that the email and phone number you are using are professionally appropriate and error free. Do not include address and phone number if your resume or CV will be posted publicly online.

  • Name of School
  • Degree Earned
  • Major(s) and Minor(s)
  • Expected Graduation Date
  • GPA (optional- not on CV)

Hint- Highest degree first.

  • Reverse Chronological Order
  • Job Title
  • Company Name
  • Dates of Employment
  • Job Description/Responsibilities/Duties
  • Significant Accomplishments or Contributions

Hint- Can include paid and non-paid positions, internships, and military experience.

Optional Parts You Can Include on Your Resume

A brief description of your skills, experience and goals as they relate to the specific job you are applying for.

Hint- 2-3 sentences. Make sure you update this each time you send your resume to a new company and do not mistakenly send the wrong one to the wrong company.

Identify the skills that the employer is looking for and list those that you possess using the same verbiage as they use in their posting or job description.

Hint- Only list the qualifications you actually have. Do not over inflate your skill set.

List relevant classes or projects that you were involved in that you gained knowledge from that is relevant to the position.

Hint- List the course title. This information can also be listed as a subset of Education.

List honors, awards, grants and grants that are merit-based, the year received, and a brief description.

Hint- This information can also be listed as a subset of Education.

List travel experiences that have relevance to the position you are applying for.

List the project title, where it was published, and the date it was published, your role in the project (i.e. Research Assistant), lab, project name, and techniques used.

Hint- STEM fields number publications and will BOLD your own name in the list of authors. CVs will list publications in citation format.

  • Brief Description of Accomplishment if Highly Relevant

List any licenses or certificates you have earned that are relevant to the position that you are applying for. List their expiration dates.

Hint- Only list those that are current.

List any organizations that you are a member of, and any leadership position(s) you held within the organization, if applicable. Include dates of membership.

Hint- Only list those that are current.

References are not included on resumes.

Hint- CVs include full contact information for references.
